open to all, but limited to 20 students, that Dave English will be teaching on May 13th - 15th at the Avimor Community Center and Katherine Albertson Park. It is the goal to offer this workshop in the spring to help in developing and remembering the concepts taught before the warmer weather and summer painting season begins. This also provides plenty of time to complete any work for the August PAPI Initial Point Gallery show and to be ready for the Eagle Plein Air Festival in October.
This workshop will focus on “the fundamentals of design, composition, value, color and draftsmanship” as the foundations of traditional artwork. These topics apply to all genres, medias and Artwork, be it plein air or studio work, though we will focus on the Plein air experience. The goal is to give the students the tools required to view their own works with a critical eye so that corrections can be made before they become larger problems. We will explore how using these principles affects what the viewer sees and in what order they see it.
"There is so much that goes into making a successful painting! Ultimately, painting is decision making, not copying. We want to learn how to think, analyze, and interpret. The more we understand and practice the principles of good art, the better choices we can make. Good decisions and purposeful choices, experience and intuition, is the way to powerful artwork."
Day #1 (Saturday) will be from 9 am to 5 pm in the classroom at the Avimor community center (bring your own lunch or use the nearby Pub). It is required for the student to bring their own supplies and materials that they use in their plein air painting along with their lunch. We will end whenever attendees prefer.*BONUS: There will be another drawing for a nice “Robert Bateman’s Retrospective of limited editions” book valued at $30, at the end of the day.
Day #3 (Monday) this workshop ties in well to a planned PAPI paint out at the Katherine Albertson Park from Monday 15th thru the following weekend. So, I will make myself available for assistance and help on Monday during the paint out to any attendees of the workshop that wish to paint at the park that day, essentially making this like a 3-day deal.
The price of this workshop is a discounted $75 for PAPI members, and $150 full price for non-PAPI members (if at time of registration one becomes a PAPI member, then the discounted PAPI price will be applied). * NOTE: Just one of the many benefits to becoming a PAPI member is that “Quality Art Supply” gives a 40% discount to all PAPI members.
